Harry, got your message, but I've been attending to a family matter over the last week.  I don't think the noise bylaw covers vehicles simply travelling on roads, regardless of the hour, but would cover loading and unloading before 7 am.  All I can say is that you should call Wolfgang, but my understanding from him is that given previous discussions he has had in the area, he would likely require corroboration from neighbors, other than Tom Pickett due to perceived grinding of axes.  You could also talk to Don Brown, chief of CRD bylaw enforcement (1-800-663-7867), but Don will also check with Wolfgang.  Gary

Mr. Holman, in front of several persons, DENIED having sent the above e-mail. I have not heard from him since I sent him a copy. (Wolfgang is the CRD by-law enforcer on SSI.)

Having received NO written report of the January 14th oil spill, the following e-mail was sent to Gray Horncastle of WALP. He had visited the oil spill and interviewed SOME of those involved.

Attn Gary Horncastle - Ministry of WALP

On Jan 14 2004 Laurie Hedger of 124 Lee Rd. Salt Spring Island spilt a considerable amount of diesel fuel on his property, spilling over on to a neighbor's certified organic farm and into the ditches which flow into the Fulford Creek - salmon bearing stream. I am told that diesel fuel can still be smelt on the neighboring property as of today Monday Feb 23 04.

My neighbor supplied you with video tape of the incident and there were several witnesses including myself to the incident.

We are all prepared to testify that this was a significant act of water and soil contamination.

I would  like a written copy of your report of this incident.

On Feb 16 2004 neighbors and people driving along the Fulford Gange Road witnessed the escape of muddy water and foam from the Hedger property at 124 Lee  Rd.

This was seen to have run under the road through a culvert, down the hill and entered  Fulford  Creek.  Another  neighbour took a picture of one of Hedger's garbage trucks with the back opened being steamed out at about the same time. Mr Hedger told other neighbors that he was cleaning oil out of the back of his garbage truck. These garbage trucks are being used to haul medical wastes among other toxic items. These trucks are not allowed to be opened for cleaning into the sewers at the Hartland landfill. We can't understand why the CRD is allowing them to be steam cleaned out on bare earth , creating leachate here on gravel in an area of shallow wells and irrigation ponds.

Pictures of this incident and this e-mail are now published at http://www.savesaltspring.com/

We need to know:

.what tests you did, to verify Mr. Hedger's "only one cup story"

.what proof Hedger supplied to prove this story?

.whether you believe Hedger's story?

.what fines were imposed and what steps were taken  prevent further events such as these?
