By and large the outcome of the Texada logging attack on Salt Spring Island from November 2000 through August 2002 could have been an awful lot worse.
Of the 5000 acres that were acquired by Texada from the Princess von Thurn und Taxis, all but about 250 acres (4 lots in the Burgoyne Bay area) have been "rescued" in one fashion or another.
True, there are some terrible scars - the Mount Tuam area near the Monastery, Lees Hill and the watershed area of Mount Maxwell but as they say out here in British Columbia "Trees grow back".
A lot of the land has become parkland. Some has been covenanted with a proviso for "modest" residence; the Maxwell watershed was saved by a curious combination of contributors; 400 acres adjoining the watershed were saved for sustainable logging; the lands on Lees Hill will become "clean" farmland.
Thanks are due to the Land Conservancy of BC, Salt Spring Conservancy, the Save Salt Spring Society, Nature Trust of Canada and of course "The Ladies of the Calendar" and many of the people of Salt Spring Island.
