As you are probably aware, on November 1, 1999, Texada Land Corporation acquired approximately 4,600 acres on the south end of Salt Spring Island and announced their intention to remove 60% of the merchantable timber from these lands. Nearly 90% of the lands have been identified as either high scenic value or high biodiversity value (sensitive ecosystems) because they are either large chunks (100 hectares) of contiguous second growth forest, or wetlands, old growth forests and Garry oak meadows.

It is my understanding that the Provincial Government has funds set aside for the purchase of parkland in the Gulf Islands. I urge you to allocate funds to the purchase of the Texada Lands, particularly the sensitive areas around Burgoyne Bay and Mt. Maxwell so that people from British Columbia, and indeed from around the world, can continue to take pride in this unique and irreplaceable resource only 50 kilometers from the urban center of Vancouver. It would be unforgivable if the future recreational and tourism value that Salt Spring Island represents to the province and people of British Columbia were lost forever because of a lack of government leadership at this critical juncture.

The Texada Lands are rapidly being logged. Please take immediate action.
